Il Gelsomino

Lovely four bedroom private holiday rental with swimming pool in the middle of Umbria (central Italy). The holiday home sits on top of a hill and is totally fenced. The covered terrace is lined with jasmine, hence the name we have picked: ''Il Gelsomino''.

"We enjoyed a lovely holiday. The house is beautifully situated and the views are phenomenal."

Outside the garden the owner keeps some goats and sheep, giving a nice farm-like atmosphere. The animals can not come close to the house or pool, so you can see them occasionally and do not have any smell or other irritation from them.

There is a small fish pond on the premises as well, with gold fish.

The private swimming pool is 4 by 8 meters and from 1.10 to 1.30 meters deep. There is an an spacious sun terrace. There are sun beds. The pool area is down a few steps from the house. From the kitchen door and terrace you can overlook the pool area through the jasmine.

2016:

Dear Saskia and Sylvia,

We have spent two wonderful weeks in Villa Il Gelsomino in Umbria in the second half of August 2016. Our two families with four little kids enjoyed the stay very much. We've profited a lot from the swimming pool, while the kids loved to feed goats every day!

The owners, Roberto and Enrico, are very nice and helpful - their English is improving and we had no problems to communicate with them. We've even invited them to swap our home in Brussels for next summer (joke J).

The region is certainly worth visiting. The local restaurants are nice and not expensive. We've also tasted a wonderful Umbrian wine, Montefalco Sagrantino, and brought few bottles back with us.

Must see are the old towns of Todi, Montefalco and Spoleto, while excursions to Orvieto, Assisi and Perugia are also recommended (not to mention shopping for kids cloths and shoes in Corciano shopping centre).

Supermarket EMI in nearby Bastardo was open on Sundays and even on 15 August. We recommend strongly to taste ice creams in F.C. Caffé in Bastardo - they are the best we had in Italy!

2014:

Dear Saskia and Sylvia,

I herewith give you in short our feedback about our stay at Il Gelsomino. We enjoyed a lovely holiday. The house is beautifully situated and the views are phenomenal. Everything you’ve mentioned on your website is true and the house exceeded our expectations.

Best regards, Noel Holland

Hello Saskia and Sylvia,

Again we enjoyed our stay in Umbria: the house was fine and the owners were helpful it always seems necessary to speak a little bit Italian, many locals do not speak a foreign language for us it wasn’t a problem, but if you are with a group, the swimming pool can be a bit too small the Italians in general are so helpful!

Best regards, Toon Holland

From 2012:

Dear Willemijn and Saskia,

I would love to give feedback about our stay in Il Gelsomino:

We have totally enjoyed this beautiful villa. Actually to understand and feel how fantastic this villa really is, you will have to go there. The villa was clean and cosy with spacious bedrooms and good beds. Around the villa the grounds are wild but well maintained, the children (5, 12 and 15) enjoyed playing here. The ground are closed by a big automatic gate, with remote control. There are no neighbors, so you have optimal privacy. The small pond is fenced so there is no danger in case children can not yet swim. The goats (who never provide any irritation) are lovely and our smallest child really enjoyed feeding them every day.

From the large covered terrace you enjoy beautiful views over the valley below and the hills further back. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner every day from here. In the evening you can see some lights in the town below. There are two hammocks in the shade from where to relax. There is also a built in food barbecue on the veranda. The pool and adjacent terrace are lovely. The sun beds are comfortable and there is a table with chairs. On the pool level there is a bathroom and shower so you do not have to walk up the stairs. Here also a nice room with table tennis table.

The atmosphere, the peace and quiet, the silence … really excellent!

The owners:

Very friendly, eager to help. They came every other day to clean the pool, test the water and add chlorine when needed. They always came exactly on the agreed time and hooted before driving onto the property. After one week they changed the sheets, vacuumed the villa and cleaned the bathrooms. Due to the terrible drought in Umbria there was a risk we would remain without drinking water and the water level in the pool was also going down. The owners organized a lot of water in trucks, so we never ran out.

In short: we will never forget our stay in villa Il Gelsomino and it was far too short!

Best wishes, Claudia

2011:

The positives:

What a lovely week we have had in Il Gelsomino! The house is spacious, the views lovely, the position excellent and the privacy total. In a week we have been visiting beautiful towns like Assisi, Orvieto, Todi, Perugia, Spoleto and not to forget the Tempietto sul Clitunno, all in about half an hour drive. After the trips we enjoyed the calm of the house and the refreshing pool. On the terrace with view over the whole (or half) of Umbria we had our daily breakfast and dinners, after which we brought the leftovers to the goats. Fantastic.

The negatives:

However wonderful it all was, in a different time of the year or with the pool closed I would not want to stay here. The grounds and the views are formidable but inside the house is rather dated and not very clean. The furnishings are typically Italian and we were prepared for this style, however for the price we paid we had expected the house to be thoroughly cleaned at least.

Comment from the owner: there will be other cleaning ladies in 2012 to ensure this will not happen again.

The downpayment is 30% of the rental fee. The remaining sum has to be paid one month before arrival. There is no security deposit to be paid.

In Italy the tourism tax has been introduced. Each town can decide independently whether to apply this tax. It is important to keep in mind that the prices on our website do NOT include the tourism tax. Where we received confirmation from house owners that they have to ask for this tax, it is written underneath the price table.

Villa in Umbria is an intermediary and as such rents out holiday homes and apartments on behalf of their owners. When you book we will be sending an agreement in which you will find the bank details for the down payment and the final payment.

We know each vacation rental personally and also the owners of all the holiday rentals we have in our portfolio.
