Umbria newsletters from 2014

Umbria Newsletter Autumn 2014

The Autumn newsletter has had some delay: we have been waiting for the publication of our updated website ! We are very happy to announce that after many months of hard work it is finally on line! Have a look and tell us what you think:

Though the content is the same as before, you'll now be able to easily view the website from you tablet or smartphone. We also worked on the integration with our blog and social media. If you find content you like, it is now easier to share with friends or family.

Blog posts about Umbria

In this last newsletter of 2014 we would like to highlight some of the blog posts of this past year. These blog posts have been particularly successful and give a good picture of what Umbria is like. Have a read and get some ideas for your next holiday in Umbria!

If you like walking this blog post talks about a very attractive walk up the Mount Monteluco starting from Spoleto.

In Umbria there are many festivals and village feasts, too many to mention here. This post talks about the Mercato delle Gaite in Bevagna, reliving the medieval times, crafts and way of living.

A good reason for a great day out for the whole family is a session of easy rafting in Scheggino. A wonderful experience, also for the inexperienced and children.

With some of our guests we went winetasting in San Gemini, near Terni. A lovely day out.

For some hands on advise on how to behave and what to do during one of the many sagra's in Umbria.

Closing the year, a summer gone by : October in Perugia.

New holiday rentals added

During the past months we also visited new holiday rentals and these have been added to the new website. We liked them a lot and believe our guests will enjoy a stay in one of these houses.

Casa Umbertide

Lovely private home for 4, amazing views over the hilly green landscape. If you are looking for peace and quietness, this is the place to be, at 20 minutes from Umbertide in the North of Umbria.

Agriturismo Allerona

A small scale agriturism with two spacious apartments sharing a pool. Between Fabro and Allerona in the west of Umbria.

Podere Montegiove

Also in the western part of Umbria at 20 minutes from Fabro is this modern and comfortable apartment for 4 sharing the swimming pond (yes, a pond, not a pool) with the owner and the guests of her small 2 bedroomed bed & breakfast. The owner is a Dutch lady who also is a good chef. Want to enjoy her kitchen?

We wish you all a good winter season and see you in Umbria !

It is summer again, time for the summer newsletter. The first tourists in Umbria have already gone home, the greater number of tourists will arrive these coming weeks. The Umbrian landscape is still green and here and there cheerfully yellow colored by the sunflower fields. A true lust for the eyes (and for the bees), every year again.

Last week Sylvia enjoyed a one-day-holiday at Country House Dante. A holiday farm in the North Umbrian countryside not far from Città di Castello. An excellent family run restaurant, friendly people, sun, swimming pool, good food en delicious wines… what more could you wish for during your holiday? Read our blog about this holiday together with the owners Luciana and Dante.

We are always visiting new potential holiday villa's and apartments. Many are turned down, but this little gem we really wanted to add to our portfolio. It completely answers the idea of a holiday home in Umbria: an authentic farmhouse, carefully restored, excellent views over the Umbrian landscape, a private pool. We call this house "Il Rospo".

Spring is in full swing again. Winter has passed without even noticing. It wasn't cold at all, it just rained and rained. Luckily the sun has returned and nature is all green again. This is the time to literally experience Umbria as the green heart of Italy!

Spring is also the time of many local events. We already had the Easter festivities and The Tulip festival in the area where we live. The coming weekend 8-9-10 May the event Calendimaggio in Assisi is on the program. Every year on the 15th of May in Gubbio there is the Corsa dei Ceri and so on. Keep an eye on our social media, Facebook, Twitter and Google+, to get an idea of the most interesting events in Umbria.

The medieval festival Il Mercato delle Gaite takes place every year in Bevagna. Bevagna is a small village in central Umbria, only a few kilometers from Montefalco. In the middle ages Bevagna was a trading center on the Via Flaminia. Now it is a very beautiful village that is worth a visit.

Bevagna is divided into four quarters “Gaite”: 1) Gaita San Giorgio 2) Gaita San Giovanni 3) Gaita San Pietro and 4) Gaita Santa Maria. During the festival the people of the four quarters in Bevagna open taverns and show medieval crafts. You can taste traditional Umbrian dishes like polenta ghiotta, gnocchi al castrato, arrosticini, lumache and “dolci tipici”. In taverns the people are dressed in authentic clothes. Plates and cups are made from "old" pottery. It is like going back to the Middle Ages. As if you relive the life of the people, the markets and the old crafts as in the Middle Ages. Here you can see how they blew glass, forged iron, how they worked on silk and how they made paper. This year the event will take place on 19-29 June 2014.

You will enjoy Umbria even more with a good glass of Sagrantino wine, a local wine of Montefalco. Montefalco is a medieval village in the center Umbria and offers a beautiful view of the surrounding vineyards and olive groves. For museum, food en wine lovers Montefalco is the place to be!

Wine Cellar Colle Ciocco has been established in 1935 and today it is run by the two Spacchetti brothers, Lamberto and Elisio. They make wine and olive oil in Colle Ciocco’s cellar. It covers 19ha, 8ha of Sagrantino and other grapes and 9ha of olive groves. The farm lies 400 metres above sea level and has a magnificent view of the surrounding Umbrian hills. In Colle Ciocco’s cellar the grapes become wine. Montefalco’s Sagrantino, Montefalco Red and the white wines Clarignano and Tempestivo. From the olives they make three types of extra virgin olive oil: Fiore, Fruttato and the Gentile.

There are two varieties of wines made from 100% Sagrantino grape. The Montefalco Sagrantino Rosso and the Montefalco Sagrantino Passito. The Montefalco Sagrantino Rosso is of great structure. The Montefalco Sagrantino Passito is one of the finest Italian dessert wines. It can be drunk with Umbrian “biscotti” and mature cheese. Also the white wines are outstanding!

At the Colle Ciocco cellar they make three varieties of olive oil. The Fiore olive oil is delicate and is recommended for dressing dishes, carpaccio and grilled meat. The Fruttato olive oil is slightly spicy and bitter flavor, suggested for bruschetta, salads, beans and soups. The Gentile olive oil has an aroma less intense and is recommended for fish and meat dishes.

Wine tasting at the Cellar Colle Ciocco is possible every day. The entrance is free. The Spacchetti brothers speak English. It is not necessary to make a reservation. It is a great experience! For information and address:

It is that time again: our winter newsletter. This winter, like last winter has been very wet and misty. Real cold hasn't yet knocked on our door. For some snow we'll have to go to the Dolomites this year.

All the rain, for the second year in a row, is very good news for the Lake Trasimeno. Its water level has gone up significantly, rising to minus 10 centimetres, compared to the zero level which has been established at 257.33 metres above sea level (news message from of the 31st of January). This is a record that hasn't been reached for the last 25 years!

It's fantastic news for our guests that enjoy watersports and a swim in the natural waters of the Lake Trasimeno. From the shores of the Isola Polvese for instance, where this picture was made:

This year, Sylvia took the initiative to promote the activities if Umbriabeecoming. She already collaborates with them for a while. Umbriabeecoming is organised by the cultural association Umbrialab in Terni. Umbrialab offers some activities all year round. There is a wide choice: from sportive activities like rafting, to wine and beer tastings or guided tours. Whatever activity is on offer, they will all give the participants an unexpected view of Umbria.

The members of Umbrialab that can provide information or make reservations for the activities are Marco, Federica en Simone. They speak english well and will be happy to help you.

Get to know Umbria, the famous green heart of Italy, together with Umbriabeecoming!

We just added a new vacation rental to our website. A lovely home, ideal for families with children or also for two or three couples traveling together. It is very spacious, it sits alone on its hill with wonderful views all around, large pool, very private and not far from interesting sights in both Umbria and Tuscany. We called the house: Podere Castel Rigone.

The Umbria Jazz festival in Perugia has been one of the most important music events in Italy for years now. It takes place during the second and the third week of July, every year since 1973! The town of Perugia is bustling during these weeks with many concerts in the streets and on its squares.

Many famous jazz musicians have already performed here from Dizzy Gillespie to Sarah Vaughan, from Art Blakey to Stan Getz, as well as Chet Baker, Lee Konitz, Carla Bley and Keith Jarrett.

The past edition was a great succes with famous artists like Prince, Sting, B.B. King, Chick Corea and Gilberto Gil.

If you are in Umbria this summer do stop by and enjoy the atmosfere during the Umbria Jazz Festival. For the bigger concerts one has to book in time (very much in time!), but there are also many very enjoyable street performances.

If you do not want to miss out on the above activities, book your holiday in Umbria now!

Choose one of our houses and get a discount of EUR 30 on the net rental price. Send us an email with the promotional code umbrie2014@villainumbria, or write this code in the notes when you make a reservation request via
