La Vigna

La Vigna (the vineyard) is situated in the centre of Umbria, just below the old village of Saragano in the area of Collazzone, between Todi and Foligno. On this small scale farm excellent wines and olive oil are produced.

"...we enjoyed the peace, the quietness, the views, the friendly people. It all made up for a good holiday."

The owners of La Vigna have turned this antique building into a small scale holiday rental, with cantina where they make olive oil and the famous Sagrantino and Montefalco Rosso wine. Read more about their excellent wines in our blog post.

There are 3 apartments for rent, sharing a nice swimming pool and garden. One apartment has two bedrooms and the others have one bedroom. The apartments can be rented together as one private holiday accommodation with 4 bedrooms.

The main house with origins from the 17th century, was renewed in the 90's. The owners have  maintained its original structure. In the main house the owners have their own apartment. They use this occasionally as they are living in Rome and come now and then in the weekends. One of the three apartments is also in the main house. The other two apartments are in the newly built house below where the cantina is (where the wine is made).

The property is surrounded by olive groves, vineyards and some fields with cereals. Furthermore there is some forest and a natural Mediterranean vegetation. The holiday rental is about 350 meters above sea level, and enjoys beautiful views over the Umbrian hills.

La Vigna holiday rental has a swimming pool (5 by 12 meter with Roman steps on one side and 1.20 meter deep). The pool has spacious sun terraces with sun beds. There is a big BBQ guests can share. Furthermore there is a ping pong table and a "mini soccer" table.

Dear Saskia and Sylvia,

we herewith send you our feedback. Upon arrival there was nobody waiting for us. We called the owner, but he didn’t answer the phone. We were not worried at all, we thought: “we are on a holiday and everything will be ok!” We waited and we enjoyed the views from the terrace. At a certain moment a very friendly gentleman with his dog passed by and he asked us if we were the new guests of La Vigna! He spoke a bit English. He told us that they expected us one week later! He apologized for the misunderstanding, but it was all fine. He called Devis, the caretaker who was at that moment working in the countryside. They are a wonderful team. Very helpful and friendly. For the misunderstanding Devis gave us two bottles of Umbrian red wine. We felt more than welcome! They made us feel at home. Both informed us about places to visit, restaurants etc. On my wife’s birthday we got a nice “surprise” breakfast with eggs, sausages, cheese, bread, butter and a bottle of white wine in our apartment. How fantastic! I could tell you more about our holiday experience in Umbria, but in short we want to tell you that we had a lovely vacation in Umbria and we enjoyed La Vigna. A holiday not to forget. Many thanks to Giovanni and Devis, Villa in Umbria and the very nice Umbrian people. You all made our holiday complete! We will come back. Thank you for organizing our holiday.

We will be in touch again!

Regards, Gerard and Sonja Holland

Hello Saskia and Willemijn,

I want to thank you for a lovely holiday. We had a good time at a wonderful location. Devis gave us some excellent advice about restaurants in the area and we enjoyed the peace, the quiet, the views, the friendly people. It all made up for a good holiday.

If possible, we would like to return to the same place next year.

Kind regards,
Giovanni & Anja

Hi Saskia and Willemijn,

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Umbria ! It is a very beuatiful area and the silence one can actually hear ! Apart from the cicades and birds twinkling we didn’t hear a thing. This is difficult to find anywhere in Belgium. Devis did his best to make it all more comfortabe for us. He is very accomodating. Already the first evening we had to call him, because we closed rhe door with the keys inside and our baby sleeping inside! Panic ! But Devis came along and resolved the situation. A tip for future guests: always take the keys with you when you go outside. If the door closes behind you, you will need the keys to get in again. On the first morning Devis accompanied us to Bastardo to get to the supermarket and invited us for a coffee in the local bar. Such a good service! Each morning the pool was cleaned, the garden is well kept. A change of linen halfway or holiday (we stayed 2 weeks) was very welcome. We had several large centipedes in the house that scared us a lot, but knowing they don’t hurt we got them out before going to bed. We probably were the first guests, because the house was clean, but dusty.  The location is a fair bit from the high way, but we knew this beforehand and it is probably because of this that we could enjoy the total silence.

We fully enjoyed our holiday!

Good luck to WIllemijn with her new endeavours and to Saskia good luck with Villa in Umbria. Thank you both for the good service.

Regards, Bert en Marleen

Hello Saskia and Willemijn,

We were at La Vigna for the second time and we would like to let you know that there have been some improvements. The road leading up to the house was redone and easier to drive then last year. We now had fly screens in the bedroom windows. There was a fan available. We also had new pots and pans, plates, cups etc.  All we needed was there.

This time we also met the owners themselves. We enjoyed exchanging a few words with them.

We can’t think of anything negative. Maybe the barking dogs during the night (now and then) but this really did not influence our holiday at all.

We strongly recommend this holiday address.

With kind regards, F. Verhevick

From 2012:

Hello Saskia and Willemijn,

We really enjoyed our stay in La Vigna. All was according to our wishes. Because the other apartments had not been rented during our stay, it was very quiet. We had the sole use of the swimming pool and the grounds around the villa. The weather was great, occasionally even a bit too hot, but you will not hear us complain about that … one jump in the pool and we were ready to continue… Devis was really helpful and we received some tips about when we arrived.
The only small drawback were the mosquitoes … but we immediately bought some stuff against them. We would have loved to stay another week, but … Maybe next year? In any case, we do thank you for all: the information, the website, the tips, etc.

Best wishes from Belgium, Francis, Sandra, Ines and Eline

Dear Willemijn and Saskia,

We have enjoyed our stay in Umbria and especially in La Vigna. During the week of our stay we have always had dinner in front of our apartment because we could not imagine there being any restaurant in the area offering a better view on the valley and the sunset than we were having. Every evening we thoroughly enjoyed this.
The grounds were very nice, quiet and we used the gorgeous swimming pool frequently. The apartment was fine with enough space for two people. To our surprise it remained fairly cool inside, even after a very hot day. The bathroom was spectacular with a very good shower. Despite all being so well, we do have a few remarks. We did not like the fact that we could not open the roof top window in the bedroom. We therefore kept the door open at all times. We also had some trouble with the cooker, lighting it was a bit difficult. Therefore we did not use the oven either. We did try to use the grill but the electrical system could not handle that.
Positive furthermore was the friendly help of Devis. He did not speak English (and we did not speak Italian) but he understood very fast what we meant so we managed to communicate reasonably well. We once got a bit off the road and he came to the rescue immediately with a jeep, pulling us out.
In short, our holiday in Umbria was great and we thank you for your perfect organization. It is definitely worth repeating.

With best wishes, Nelleke and Lex

Hi Saskia and Willemijn,

Thanks for your kind email. We have only positive things to say about our stay at La Vigna... so many thanks for your efficient organisation and assistance in booking and organising the trip.

Everybody was very helpful and went to great lengths to make us feel welcome. The caretakers Devis and Francesco were very kind even though we couldn't speak much Italian & they didn't speak English. They were very understanding and thoughtful. They organised for the TV aerial to be fixed so we could watch the European football matches, which was well beyond the call of duty (as the flat hadn't advertised a TV).  They also sorted out the Internet for us which was very kind - and let us use this facility.

They also brought us free eggs which was very sweet of them. The villa itself is lovely and the apartment in the house complex has everything we needed for the stay including lovely sitting out areas. The views are stunning and the location is very central for all major historic centres so we were able to have many trips to Umbrian towns. I can recommend the Saragano restaurant too! The pool was great - and was cleaned regularly.  Everything was well-maintained.

Your website is excellent and full of very helpful information which we drew upon extensively.

One small thing - the new sign on the front of the villa is hard to see and we had trouble finding the exact property at first... but Devis came to the rescue.

My only final comment is that there are three lovely dogs who don't get to have many walks. Please can somebody take them out more or give them some toys as they look a bit bored. We played with them once when Francesco came around to give them a run out & they were so keen to have human attention!  I was going to buy them some dog toys but wasn't sure if the owner would approve.

I'm starting a new travel blog here and some Umbria posts will appear in the next few days including La Vigna comments (all positive):

We would definitely stay again - a great trip.

Many thanks and all the best.

Sue and Mark

From 2011:

As such it was a good place to stay. Friendly people, elegant furnished and the position was ideal. Many tours were easy to make. All was clean and the kitchen had new pans and other things we needed. We did regret that the terrace in the picture online was not our terrace in front of the apartment. We should have asked. Furthermore we had some occasional problems with hot water for the shower.

Best wishes, Leslie

we had a very good holiday in La Vigna. We can only be enthousiastic about the place, surroundings and the reception by the care taker plus the house is all aspects. We have no comments and as far as we are concerned only compliments. If we really do not to make a remark, we did miss a reading light in the house. Also regarding the communication with you we only can give compliments. Fast reaction to our questions and all info was correct!!! We will certainly check your website again in case we would have plans to visit Umbria again.

Best wishes, Jan and Wennie

From 2010:

Hello Saskia and Willemijn,

We had a great holiday and were very lucky weather wise.

The second week we were in Italy we stayed in la vigna. The owners did their best to create a place which would please the guests. The custodian became more and more relaxed during the week and was clearly practising his English on us. It took some time to fill in the registration form for tourists but after that Nello was on the loose.  We already did some shopping in the supermarket but Nello spontaneously offered a box of his own eggs to us. This went on during the week and all in all we ate about 24. He also gave us a bottle of his homemade wine, so sweet! Another bottle offered to us upon leaving we kindly refused due to luggage restrictions of the airline. He took it well.  We also met with the owners, the lady was very kind and gave us a handmade route description on how to get to the airport.
One small comment: for Dutch renters a small dutch coffee machine might be welcome. The small Italian coffeemaker holds too many secrets for us. We saved ourselves by using our own filterbags with a  funnel we bought at a Conad supermarket put on top of a winekaraf. Sacrilege it maybe but we had to do something. Worked very well for only 80 cents. Apart from that everything top.

We look back to the visit of the Montelabate with fond memories.

Regards, Wanda and Hans

Dear Saskia and Willemijn,

We have returned from our holiday in Umbria and Abruzzo. First of all compliments on your stellar service. We really enjoyed your quick responses to our questions and your complete information on the accommodation. We loved La Vigna but have a few remarks which will make staying there even more agreeable.

Positive +:
The welcome package with pasta, olive oil and other treats.
The sofabed had already been made for the children.
Very cosy house.
Lovely views.
The nice pool.
Well kept grounds.
Baker, supermarket and restaurants all within a range of 5 km.

Point to improve on -:
Only the bathroom has a fly screen.
The cutlery was in a drawer next to the sofa bed, placing it in the kitchen might be handier.
On arrival the housekeeper asked us to pay. Our flight had been cancelled so we had the feeling of having been on the road for two days. We knew we had to pay the open standing bill and security deposit but we would have preferred doing some shopping  and having breakfast first.

We hope you can do your advantage with these points and we will certainly recommend your organisation to others.

Kind regards, Epha and John

Comment Villa in Umbria: as from the 2011 season guests will be asked to pay the full rent before their arrival avoiding akward situations upon arrival

The downpayment is 30% of the rental sum. The balance can be paid one month before arrival. The security deposit is 150 Euro per apartment.

In Italy the tourism tax has been introduced. Each town can decide independently whether to apply this tax. It is important to keep in mind that the prices on our website do NOT include the tourism tax. Where we received confirmation from house owners that they have to ask for this tax, it is written underneath the price table.

Villa in Umbria is an intermediary and as such rents out holiday homes and apartments on behalf of their owners. When you book we will be sending an agreement in which you will find the bank details for the down payment and the final payment.

We know each vacation rental personally and also the owners of all the holiday rentals we have in our portfolio.

You can read more about us on the 'About Villa in Umbria' page.
